Liz Sullivan In kindergarten, Liz Sullivan's teachers, recognizing artistic talent when they saw it in a five year old, invited her to paint the walls and doors of her classroom. She enthusiastically accepted the project and has considered herself an artist ever since. She took art classes in college, but never settled in to a painting routine until 1989, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and decided to give herself the long overdue gift of time to paint seriously. She displayed her first painting on the wall of her antique restoration business shop, where a dealer purchased it immediately and asked her to do more. Liz says of her subject matter that it just "turned up unexpectedly" shortly after beginning to paint again after her long hiatus. She was initially inspired by her six cats, but elements of the antiques she restores routinely creep into her paintings as well. She is also inspired by the beauty of her environment- the valleys and mountains and old country people of her community and rural Western North Carolina. Upon completion of a painting, Liz hands it to her husband, Pete, who crafts the wooden frame. Liz then paints the frame to match the mood of her artwork, thus creating an entirely unique piece of art. |
