MICHAEL Hunt and NAOMI Dalglish A former resident artist at the Penland School of Craft in Western North Carolina, Michael Hunt continues to seek knowledge and inspiration. He recently returned from a trip to Korea, where he apprenticed in a traditional Korean pottery for 6 months. Though he is continuously inspired by historical pottery from around the world, he only improves upon his own unique and organic style of making pots. Naomi graduated from Earlham College, where she studied ceramics intensively with Mike Thiedeman. While taking a kiln building class at Penland, she met Michael, and their similar approaches to making pottery quickly inspired them to collaborate in making one body of work. Michael and Naomi enjoy using low-tech ways of working. They use coarse, impure materials whenever possible, and have been known to drive miles out of their way to gather a particular type of ash or clay. Their pots are made on a Korean-style Kick wheel, out of slabs, or using the Korean paddle and anvil technique. They use dark local clay and ash glazes on their wood fired wares that are rich with inherent variations thanks to their methods and materials. |
