A native son of Alabama, Trés Taylor has been painting for a living for more than twenty years. Once upon a time, he was a biochemist, but he has found much more satisfaction in surrendering to the mysteries of nature, rather than trying to solve them. His work revolves around the idea of basking in your surroundings and being present in the moment.
Leaving his position as a biochemist and leaping into a new career as an artist was an act of faith and risk for Trés and he says it saved his life. “I am closest to God when I am painting. He uses my hands to show my brothers and sisters what he has shown me, which is, when our hearts are free to love, then we will see and experience the world.”
Trés found many spirit guides along the way in the form of toads and hawks, which reminded him to return to the spirit and the beauty of the natural world for inspiration.
Throughout this journey, the early stages of which happened in Japan, the Birmingham native has continued to share emotionally rich narratives about monks, nature, beauty, light and his inspired observance of this world.
Trés begins each painting with a wooden frame covered in tar paper, which creates a textural ground for his next layers; perhaps wood putty to add more dimension or the paint and scrape technique he has developed. His colors & textures set the stage for the fish, critters, monks and folks inhabiting each painting, each world he creates & shares with us.
