James "Buddy" Snipe
American Folk will be closed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, but our website is always open for your perusal! To make a purchase, it’s best to send us an email until regular hours resume on Thursday January 2nd!
The last born of twelve children, the one and only James “Buddy” Snipe would often craft toys for himself and the other children out of whatever he had at hand. His creations brought so much joy that as an adult, he began to make sculptural assemblages from roots, tree limbs, vines, scrap lumber and anything else he could find that triggered his imagination. He also paints pictures on scrap lumber and tin and frames them with some of his found objects.
He incorporates the elements of high art: line, form, texture, balance, color, while also remaining uninhibited by the norms of those elements. Mr. Snipe adds rhythmic improvisation & narrative which bridges the worlds of Primitive and Modern art in completely original ways. Check out our full selection of his work on his artist page: James “Buddy” Snipe

“Local, independent businesses are the heart of the Asheville area – home to growers who are artists and artists whose work grows. Thought leaders and thought provokers, musicians and storytellers, entrepreneurs and educators, foodies and beer lovers, hippies, healers, adventurers, creators and innovators. We craft and brew and paint and carve, handcrafted by real hands. Now, those hands need a helping hand. And a hug.” – Explore Asheville

American Folk represents nearly 40 makers with one goal in mind: To expose the world to the creative powers and originality of our artists. Their visions bring life, color, joy and complexity to our gallery and to your home. Self-taught art can range from what is referred to as naive all the way to the exquisitely contemporary. We know these folks and only purchase directly from them. Some have garnered world-wide attention, some are exclusive to American Folk, but all have a unique way of expressing their world & their hearts. We are inspired by them every day…and you can be too!
